Top Styles for Spring 2013

This season is all about the natural look. Having natural, and not too perfect hair is a must. We have some great, effortless looks for you this spring.

French Knot

A 60’s look, the French knot is perfect for medium length to long hair and very French in style. Start by applying mousse to the hair and blow-dry it straight back, without a parting, then  twist your hair gently and pull it up into a loose knot, as if you were going to do a French twist,  then fold the ends under to form a loop (it’s essential that you keep the knot loose as if it’s too tight it can damage your hair). Pull the hair so that it fans out across the top of the head. Complete the look by tying a scarf round it. You can wear different coloured scarves to coordinate with your outfits. The scarf can be strategically placed to hide any signs of hair loss.

Gold

Gold is a delicate look that  is reminiscent of a medieval maiden in the woods, similar to Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings. This is another great low maintenance style that is natural and at the same time very contemporary and luxurious.  To achieve the gold effect, just divide the hair by parting it down the middle. Pull two sections back and secure at the crown using hair pins.  Add “twisted gold” metal hairpieces for a touch of simple glamour and elegance. Hair pins can also be used to help disguise any balding patches at the back of your head. This style looks best on ladies with long, straight, unlayered hair.

Pixie

This style is perfect for short hair. The textured pixie look suits women with all face shapes and hair textures. This timeless, chic cut is easy to look after and can be styled effortlessly in next to no time.  You can either go for a very short asexual look or wear the hair longer on top for softer femininity.

Messy Bob

The messy bob is a sexy, "just got out of bed" look that also suits women with all face shapes and hair textures. Women with round faces should be sure to leave plenty of length under their chin, for a more flattering style. Another way to wear this look, if you have a wide centre parting (such as pop star Fergie) is to wear it with a deep side parting. The layers in this bob are perfect for covering up female hair loss.

Female Alopecia – Spring Fashion Accessory, the Headscarf

If you are one of the estimated eight million women in the UK experiencing female hair loss or female alopecia, you may find it extremely difficult to cope with. And it’s particularly distressing if you are at a vulnerable period of your life. Some women suffering with female alopecia, which is another name for female hair loss, may even refuse to leave the house and give up their usual activities, and hobbies they enjoy because  they are worried about what people will think. It can also affect a woman’s sensuality and self-esteem.

It is important to note that if you have female hair loss, you are not alone. As previously mentioned, millions of people in the UK experience hair loss at some stage in their lives. To cope with hair loss, it is important you have the right people around you, so that you have the right support to help you regain your confidence. And you are losing your hair, a visit to the London Centre of Trichology could be just what you need. The initial consultation is free and our experts will be able to diagnose your problem and help find a solution.

Although coming to terms with alopecia can be difficult, it is important to be patient, as most hair loss is usually temporary. While some people, such as TV presenter Gail Porter, are not afraid to show it, others cover it up with various fashion accessories such as hats and scarves. It’s important to choose whichever works best for you.

One of the hottest looks on the catwalk this season is the headscarf. The Sicilian twists were spotted at Dolce and Gabbana, evoking a glamorous, Mediterranean feel. "It's about the scarf," Guido said of the hair at Dolce & Gabbana, "like how a woman would just pin her hair up [and] put a scarf on…there's a little indication of the '60s. A little Riviera feeling,"

If you the idea of sporting the new spring fashion accessory, the headscarf,  there are various ways to wear it to help you regain your confidence and ensure you are bang on trend this season.

Ways to Wear the Headscarf This Season

Sicilian Twist

If you fancy Dolce and Gabbana’s Sicilian twist, start by applying mousse to your hair and blow-dry it straight back, without a parting.  Wrap the scarf around the head, about an inch from the hairline and tie it to one side at the back of the neck. Roll up the hair into a French twist, but instead of folding the ends in, fan out the hair on the top of the head.

Sporty Look

Another way to wear a scarf is to wear it wide around the head, a few inches above the eyes, for a very sporty look. This is ideal to wear with a casual outfit, such as a denim jacket or jeans and a t-shirt.

Bandana

The bandana look great with large frame, Jackie O type sunglasses. Start by folding the bandana diagonally and put the two corners together. The result should be a triangle, with one long edge on the diagonal. Place this edge on your hairline or close to the hairline. Tie the two corners together at the back or your neck, pulling any loose hair out of the way to avoid getting it caught in the knot. Adjust the bandana according to how you want it to look and where it feels comfortable.

Cheeky Headband

A scarf knotted slightly off-centre around the hair makes for a cheeky headband look, with out giving you a headache. This is a pretty, informal look.

Classic Ponytail

You could also tie a scarf around a ponytail and pin it in place, with the ends hanging loose. It’s best to keep the ponytail fairly loose and avoid tight ponytails, as wearing ponytails too tight can damage the hair.
